Staff member Thea Arai traveled to the Manzanar National Historic Site located in California to volunteer in the visitor center.  Her month long journey in 2014 was chronicled in a personal blog about her experiences there.  Thea has a special connection to Manzanar as her father and grandparents, and other members of her family, were interned in the camp, so this journey was very close to her heart.   Manzanar is part of the U.S National Park System. It was one of ten camps, in the U.S., where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during WWII.  In April of this year Thea returns to Manzanar to continue her journey.  She has generously allowed us to link to her blogs: Manzanar 2014 and Manzanar 2015.  If you would like to know more about Manzanar and the other Internment Camps, check out the following materials available:  Farewell to Manzanar: A true story of Japanese American Experience During and After WWII Internment by Jeanne Houston; A Boy No More by Harry Mazer (Young Adult); I Am an American: A True Story of Japanese Internment by Jerry Stanley (Juvenile), Farewell to Manzanar (DVD), and more.

Did you know that during WWII, the United States interned Japanese American citizens in camps in the U.S.? That citizens were removed from their homes and businesses and forced to relocate to barbwire enclosed barracks located in California, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Arizona, and Arkansas?  That the repercussions of these actions would affect the families for decades?  Take a journey with staff member Thea Arai as she ventures back into her family's past during a volunteer month at the Manzanar Historic Site in California.  Thea returns to Manzanar for her second year and invites you along for the journey into a little known part of America's past.  Click the link, Journey to Manzanar, to read her blogs.  Explore further with books for adults, teens, and children, and DVD's on the subject.
